Common movement families
Squat, hinge, horizontal push, vertical push, horizontal pull and vertical pull patterns contain many compound options. The name of the family does not dictate one compulsory exercise.
Choose by purpose
A useful choice loads the intended tissues, can be performed with acceptable technique, fits the available equipment and can progress without an unnecessary cost for the athlete.
Isolation work still belongs
A compound lift can distribute work across several muscles. Isolation exercises can add focused volume where a broader movement is limited by another muscle or by fatigue.
